Scatec, a leading renewable energy company, has recently achieved a significant milestone by initiating the production and supply of electricity to the South African national grid from its three Kenhardt plants in the Northern Cape Province. This groundbreaking project represents one of the world’s first and largest hybrid solar and battery storage facilities, boasting a remarkable installed solar capacity of 540 MW alongside a battery storage capacity of 225 MW.

The Kenhardt plant stands out by delivering 150 MW of dispatchable power 16.5 hours per day, year-round, effectively catering to the dynamic energy demands of the national grid. Terje Pilskog, CEO of Scatec, depicted the project as a herald of a new era in energy solutions, marking a technological triumph and a steadfast commitment to sustainability. According to him, the project symbolizes the potential of integrating solar and battery storage to address both present and future energy needs.

It is noteworthy that Scatec holds 51% of the equity in this milestone project, with H1 Holdings retaining the remaining 49%. The project is financially supported by a consortium of lenders led by The Standard Bank Group as the primary arranger, with British International Investment also participating.
