The recent decision by the Council to extend the restrictive measures against individuals and entities responsible for actions aimed at destabilizing, undermining, or threatening the Republic of Moldova’s sovereignty and independence until April 29, 2025, reflects the European Union’s unwavering commitment to upholding the stability and security of Moldova. These measures serve as a demonstration of support to counteract external aggression and safeguard the country’s resilience in the face of destabilizing activities.
Currently, 11 individuals and one entity are subject to EU restrictive measures, which include an asset freeze and a travel ban. These stern measures are intended to prevent the listed individuals and entity from accessing economic resources and transiting through EU territories, reinforcing the message that any threats to Moldova’s sovereignty and independence will not be tolerated.
The European Council has reaffirmed its commitment to providing comprehensive support to Moldova in addressing the challenges stemming from Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Furthermore, the decision to open accession negotiations with Moldova in December 2023 and granting it the status of a candidate country in June 2022 underscores the EU’s active engagement in strengthening and supporting Moldova’s democracy, rule of law, stability, and security.
It is imperative to highlight that the EU’s restrictive measures were initially introduced at the request of the Republic of Moldova in order to counteract actions undermining the country’s democracy, sovereignty, and independence. This emphasizes the collaborative approach between Moldova and the European Union to tackle threats and challenges together.
