The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced its amendment to the list of project categories that qualify for the simplest form of environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
This change is aimed at simplifying the environmental review process for various energy projects, including energy storage systems, transmission line upgrades, and solar PV systems.
In light of the amendment, the DOE emphasizes its commitment to conducting thorough reviews of proposed projects while expediting the environmental review responsibilities.
Notably, the changes include streamlining the review process for building, operating, upgrading, or decommissioning battery or flywheel energy storage systems near developed areas.
Moreover, the limitations on the length of existing powerlines eligible for the simplest form of NEPA review have been removed, and the size of solar projects that qualify for the same has been increased.
