GameChange Solar, a leading solar technology company, has recently been awarded a major contract to supply its innovative Genius Tracker solar trackers for four new solar projects in Southern Africa. These projects, with a total capacity of approximately 500 MW, mark a significant step towards sustainable energy development in the region.
Southern Africa’s Renewable Energy Initiative has gained momentum with the announcement of these projects, three of which are located in South Africa. Among them, a noteworthy inclusion is the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Program project situated in the Northern Cape. Moreover, two private sector projects aimed at powering mining operations in the Northern Cape and Limpopo regions signify a strategic alignment of solar power with industrial needs in the area.
Highlighting the geographical diversity of the initiatives, the fourth project in Zimbabwe, identified as Phase 1 of the 185 MW Zimplats solar plant, is set to provide a substantial boost to the region’s power generation capabilities. With its expected launch on the horizon, this private-sector venture reinforces the growing interest and investment in renewable energy solutions in Zimbabwe.
In addition to the project developments, GameChange Solar has unveiled plans for a training and service center dedicated to its Genius Tracker products in South Africa. Derick Botha, the Chief Commercial Officer at GameChange Solar, expressed optimism about the regional impact of these initiatives. He stated, “Southern Africa has an enormous opportunity to change the energy landscape in the region with utility-scale solar projects, particularly in South Africa, where solar will help alleviate its ongoing energy crisis and help transition from polluting fossil fuels to clean energy.”
The establishment of a local team and the Cape Town-based training and service center underscore GameChange Solar’s commitment to fostering local talent and facilitating the growth of the solar energy sector in South Africa. The company’s proactive approach to supporting the region’s clean energy transition is a testament to its dedication to sustainable development and environmental responsibility.
