Ørsted, a leading renewable energy company, has recently entered into an 80 MW Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Bloomberg for the renewable energy generated by the Mockingbird Solar Center. Situated near Paris, Texas, this innovative 471 MW project is currently under construction, marking Ørsted’s largest solar endeavor in the U.S.
This landmark collaboration not only signifies Ørsted’s significant expansion in the American solar sector but also showcases the company’s pioneering approach to conservation efforts. The Mockingbird Solar Center is the first project by Ørsted to incorporate strategies for the protection of native prairie tallgrass, underlining its commitment to environmental sustainability. Notably, Bloomberg is among four corporate entities that are purchasing power from this transformative solar center, alongside Covestro and Royal DSM. The PPA officially brings the Mockingbird project to a fully contracted status for its entire 471 MW capacity.
One of the most distinctive features of the Mockingbird Solar Center is the partnership between Ørsted and The Nature Conservancy to safeguard nearly 1,000 acres of rare native tallgrass prairie located adjacent to the project. Ørsted has proactively taken steps to acquire over half of the Smiley-Woodfin National Prairie Grassland and intends to donate this land to The Nature Conservancy upon the project’s operational commencement, demonstrating a conscientious approach to land conservation and environmental stewardship.
By forging this unprecedented partnership, Bloomberg and Ørsted are trailblazing a path towards sustainable energy sourcing and corporate environmental responsibility. The Mockingbird Solar Center stands as a testament to Ørsted’s enduring commitment to clean energy and conservation, building upon the company’s existing portfolio of 12 wind, solar, and storage projects across the state of Texas.
The announcement of this momentous 15-year renewables PPA between Ørsted and Bloomberg marks a significant step forward in accelerating the transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources, setting a commendable precedent for corporate environmental consciousness and renewable energy development.
