California Energy Commission to Award Form Energy with Storage System Grant

The California Energy Commission (CEC) recently announced its approval of a $30 million grant for Form Energy to facilitate the deployment of a 5MW multi-day energy storage system, marking a significant milestone in the state’s energy landscape.

Anticipated to be located at a PG&E electric substation in Mendocino County and operational by 2025, this pioneering initiative signifies Form Energy’s introduction into California’s energy sphere and stands as a pioneering multi-day energy storage project within the state.

This commendable endeavor is underpinned by the CEC’s Long Duration Energy Storage program, an innovative platform aimed at expediting the integration of non-lithium technologies. The grant will enable Form Energy to spearhead the development and operation of the project, with support from PG&E, who will provide the essential land and interconnection point at the substation site.

Highlighting the pivotal role of long duration and multi-day energy storage technologies in advancing California’s decarbonization, cost-effectiveness, and grid reliability objectives, Jaramillo extended gratitude to the CEC for its steadfast support and acknowledged PG&E’s instrumental collaboration, which has been integral to the realization of this vital project.
