Alliant Energy recently marked a significant milestone with the completion of the Wautoma Solar Project, a substantial 99 MW solar array located in the town of Dakota and city of Wautoma within Waushara County. Spanning 624 acres and featuring nearly 240,000 solar panels, the project represents a major step towards sustainable, reliable, and cost-effective energy delivery for the company’s customer base.
One unique aspect of the project’s design was its innovative use of the Wautoma airport land, demonstrating an effective repurposing strategy that allowed for an optimized project layout and the maximization of underutilized land. This strategic approach fully embodies Alliant Energy’s commitment to ‘Act for tomorrow’ and ‘Make things better,’ as evidenced by their ongoing emphasis on sustainable practices and positive community impact.
Construction of the Wautoma Solar Project commenced in July 2022 and provided employment opportunities for nearly 150 skilled workers, including carpenters, electricians, operating engineers, and laborers. Ted Gumieny, the executive director of Northeastern Wisconsin Building Trades, commended Alliant Energy’s utilization of local contractors and the skilled labor force hired through local union halls. This deliberate choice ensured the safe, cost-effective, and timely completion of the project.
Of particular note is the exemplary safety record achieved during the project, as Alliant Energy proudly reported over 210,000 work hours without a single lost-time accident. This accomplishment underscores the unwavering dedication to safety and the exceptional skills brought by local union workers throughout the project’s development. The result is the Wautoma Solar Project, a high-quality site that stands as a source of pride for Alliant Energy’s customers and the community at large.
