On December 7th, a momentous turning point swept the South Caucasus region as the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia took a significant step towards the long-awaited peace. Their joint statement, presented by AZERTAC, demonstrates a renewed commitment to normalize relations and strive towards a peace treaty grounded in respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Following substantial discussions between the two administrations, tangible measures have been agreed upon to foster confidence-building between the nations. Reflecting the values of humanism and goodwill, Azerbaijan has magnanimously released 32 Armenian military servicemen, and reciprocally, Armenia has released 2 Azerbaijani military servicemen.

As a stirring demonstration of goodwill and mutual respect, the Republic of Armenia has withdrawn its candidacy to host the 29th Session of the Conference of Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in support of Azerbaijan’s bid. In turn, the Republic of Azerbaijan has rallied behind Armenia’s candidature for Eastern European Group COP Bureau membership. These gestures of solidarity signify a collective willingness to approach the future with a spirit of cooperation and shared interests.

With an eye to the future, Armenia and Azerbaijan pledge to continue constructive discussions, focusing on implementing further confidence-building measures to lead the way for positive impacts in the region. They call upon the international community to bolster their endeavors, recognizing the potential for building trust between their nations and fostering a ripple effect of progress throughout the South Caucasus.
