The European Commission has recently given the green light to an Important Project of Common European Interest (‘IPCEI’) that aims to promote the research, development, and initial industrial deployment of advanced cloud and edge computing technologies in Europe. This exciting new venture, named IPCEI Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI CIS), has been jointly proposed by seven Member States—France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain.

With a substantial commitment of up to €1.2 billion in public funding from the Member States, the project is projected to spur an additional €1.4 billion in private investments. As part of this initiative, 19 companies, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), are set to embark on 19 highly innovative projects.

This significant investment signals a collective dedication to bolstering Europe’s position in cutting-edge cloud and edge computing technologies. By fostering collaboration across multiple providers and harnessing the potential of both public and private resources, the IPCEI CIS has the potential to revolutionize the digital landscape and pave the way for enhanced competitiveness and innovation on a global scale.
