The European Hydrogen Week 2023, the largest annual event dedicated to hydrogen in Europe, kicked off on 20 November in Brussels. Co-organized by the Commission, this four-day conference and forum aims to bring together policymakers and hydrogen stakeholders from around the globe. With a focus on the latest developments, challenges, and opportunities in the sector, the event aims to shape the future of hydrogen within the European Union and beyond.
Launching with Prestige:
The event commenced with a powerful video message from President von der Leyen, highlighting the vital role of hydrogen in tackling global challenges. Executive Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič delivered a keynote speech, emphasizing the need to preserve the EU industry’s competitiveness. The launch set the tone for a dynamic and forward-thinking week ahead.
Tracking Progress at the Hydrogen Forum:
Commissioner Thierry Breton actively participated in the seventh Hydrogen Forum of the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance. This influential gathering takes stock of the progress achieved by the alliance and emphasizes the indispensable actions required to scale up hydrogen production capacity across the entire supply chain. These efforts are crucial for meeting the ambitious 2030 hydrogen targets in line with the REPowerEU plan.
Insights from Commissioners:
Building on this momentum, Commissioner Kadri Simson delivered a video message on the importance of supporting hydrogen infrastructure and unveiled upcoming actions in that regard. Similarly, Commissioner Hoekstra outlined the EU’s energy transition strategy and shared insights on the European Hydrogen Bank during his speech. Notably, the Commission plans to launch the Bank’s first auction for domestic production of renewable hydrogen, further supported by the EU’s Innovation Fund.
Empowering the Hydrogen Ecosystem:
On 22 November, the European Green Hydrogen Investment Day brought together key stakeholders, including over 25 investors and 10 hydrogen ventures. This platform facilitated collaboration between innovative hydrogen technology start-ups and large-scale projects across the EU. Strengthening partnerships and fostering investment are pivotal to drive the growth of the hydrogen industry.
Looking Ahead to COP28:
To conclude the European Hydrogen Week, a webinar titled “On the Way to COP28” will offer insights into how the hydrogen sector can contribute to the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai. By exploring the potential of hydrogen as a key solution in decarbonizing various sectors, the webinar will set the stage for a comprehensive and sustainable approach to combat climate change.
