The European Union (EU) and its neighboring countries have taken a significant stride towards ensuring sustainable fisheries management in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. At the 46th annual meeting of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held in Split from November 6-10, key stakeholders agreed to reinforce control and management measures, fostering a level playing field in the industry. This commitment ensures that all fisheries operators adhere to the same standards, aligning with the principles of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).
Under the auspices of the GFCM, the EU and neighboring nations jointly launched new tools designed to monitor the activities of fishing fleets operating in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. The introduction of these mechanisms aims to enhance transparency and improve accountability by sharing multiannual management plans (MAPs). Should cases of non-compliance arise, appropriate and proportionate measures will be put in place to address them effectively. Moreover, to bolster cooperative efforts and achieve tangible results on the ground, the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) will deploy a patrol vessel permanently by the end of this year.
In an astounding display of collaboration, the GFCM unanimously adopted 34 shared measures, thanks to the diligent efforts of the European Commission, member states, and over 12 other coastal nations. To facilitate the implementation of these measures and the GFCM 2030 Strategy, the EU has pledged an annual grant of €8 million. This financial support underscores the significance placed on sustainably managing fisheries and protecting the fragile ecosystems in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
Speaking on this important development, Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius emphasized that these measures are a responsible decision undertaken collectively by both EU and non-EU countries. The objective is to ensure the long-term viability of fishing activities in the region while simultaneously safeguarding the local marine ecosystems. By reinforcing joint control and compliance, this commitment establishes a solid foundation for fishermen and coastal communities to thrive sustainably.
