Mohave Electric Cooperative Building Solar+Storage Project

EDPR NA Distributed Generation (EDPR NA DG) has embarked on an innovative project in collaboration with Mohave Electric Cooperative (MEC) in Arizona, aimed at harnessing sustainable energy sources. Constructing a 23.27 MW DC ground-mounted solar array system coupled with a 60 MWh energy storage system, this initiative is a significant step towards providing renewable power, mitigating peak period energy usage, and stabilizing energy costs for MEC’s 36,700 members.

By developing solar+storage resources, MEC is actively bolstering its local generation capabilities, making the cooperative less reliant on external transmission infrastructure. This strategic move ensures the avoidance of potential transmission issues, delays, and unstable price fluctuations in the generation market.

The ground-mount solar array system implemented in the Mohave project will enable MEC to offset approximately 36,247 metric tons of carbon dioxide. This significant reduction is equivalent to the annual carbon emissions from the electricity consumption of 7,053 homes or the amount of carbon sequestered by 43,225 acres of U.S. forests within a year.

To bring this ambitious project to life, EDPR NA DG has joined forces with Prometheus Power for the construction of the solar array. Meanwhile, Stem, a leading provider of energy storage solutions, will collaborate on the energy storage component. Stem’s AI-driven clean energy optimization software, Athena, will ensure the efficient operation of the storage system.

To inaugurate the completion of the solar array, EDPR NA DG and MEC celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an on-site tour. The event was graced by an indigenous blessing ceremony led by Dave Harper, Head of Tribal Engagement at the Alliance for Tribal Clean Energy. This recognition of the Mojave spiritual connection to the land emphasized the importance of continued environmental stewardship and collaboration for the betterment of all.

As the Mohave Electric Cooperative forges ahead with this solar+storage project, it exemplifies their steadfast commitment to sustainability, reliability, and renewable energy. This groundbreaking initiative sets a commendable example for other organizations to follow as together, we work towards a greener and more sustainable future.
