Origis Energy, in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), has commenced the construction of three groundbreaking solar projects in Mississippi. These projects, comprised of one 550 MW solar installation with an additional 150 MW of battery storage, mark a significant milestone in the state’s clean energy transition.

Mississippi’s largest battery storage portfolio and the largest solar portfolio currently under construction are set to revolutionize the region’s energy landscape. The trio of projects, named Golden Triangle I and II, along with Optimist, are slated to deliver clean and sustainable energy to Mississippi residents and help TVA achieve its sustainability goals for large industrial customers.

Golden Triangle II, estimated to generate 150 MW of power with 50 MW of battery storage, is expected to be operational by the spring of 2024. Similarly, Golden Triangle I, with a capacity of 200 MW and an accompanying 50 MW of battery storage, is projected for completion by the summer of 2024. These two projects will be located in Lowndes County.

Furthermore, Optimist, located in Clay County, is anticipated to yield 200 MW of energy along with 50 MW of battery storage. Its completion is scheduled for mid-2025, further contributing to the growth of Mississippi’s renewable energy infrastructure.

Origis Energy, the primary developer and operator of the projects, has forged strong power purchase agreements with TVA. These contracts ensure competitive rates for the energy generated from the solar installations. TVA will utilize this clean energy to meet the sustainable energy needs of both businesses and residents throughout Mississippi.

Origis Energy has enlisted the construction services of RES for the portfolio, estimated to provide employment opportunities for approximately 300 workers during the implementation phase. Once the plants are completed, Origis Energy Services will assume responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the portfolio, creating around nine on-site jobs over the projected project lifespan of 35+ years.

Mitsubishi Power Americas, a reputable provider of utility-scale battery storage, has been selected to supply the battery storage systems for each project. This partnership ensures efficient and reliable grid integration, facilitating optimized energy storage and distribution across the installations.

An impressive feat, the three projects will install over 1.5 million solar panels across the sites. This substantial deployment of clean energy infrastructure will contribute to a significant reduction in carbon emissions and establish Mississippi as a notable player in the renewable energy sector.
