In recent years, India has witnessed a surge in Hindu nationalist sentiments under the leadership of Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This shift in the country’s political landscape has led to an alarming rise in violence against religious minorities, particularly Muslims. In this blog post, we delve into the growing concerns surrounding Hindu nationalism and its impact on India’s diverse society.
A Disturbing Incident Reveals Deep-seated Prejudice:
Around a month ago, a widely circulated video captured an Indian teacher instructing students to physically assault a 7-year-old Muslim classmate. The incident exposed the underlying discrimination faced by Indian Muslims, with the boy being targeted not only for his academic mistake but also for his religious identity.
The BJP’s Vision and Its Implications:
Under Modi’s leadership, the BJP has advocated for India’s transformation into a Hindu nation, where religious minorities are relegated to second-class citizenship. Muslims, who account for approximately 14% of the population, face increasing majoritarian violence and discrimination. Human rights organizations have documented a disturbing trend of rising violence against Indian Muslims, leading to concerns over the decline of human and civil rights in the country.
The Historical Roots of Hindu Nationalism:
The BJP and its ideological predecessor, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), have historically viewed India as a nation primarily for Hindus. These organizations seek to unite and mobilize a homogenous Hindu identity that was historically diverse and inclusive. Early Hindu nationalist leaders openly endorsed violence against Indian Muslims, and such genocidal rhetoric continues to persist today, with warnings of a potential genocide emerging from watchdog groups.
Modi’s Role and Controversial Past:
Prime Minister Modi himself is a lifelong member of the RSS. His tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2002 was marred by the state’s worst communal riots, resulting in the deaths of thousands, mostly Muslims. Despite international condemnation, this reputation as an anti-Muslim figure contributed to his political rise and subsequent electoral victories for the BJP in 2014 and 2019.
Rewriting History to Promote Divisiveness:
Central to the BJP’s agenda is the distortion of history to vilify Muslims, with a particular focus on the Mughal dynasty. By falsely portraying the Mughals as instigators of Hindu-Muslim conflicts, Hindu nationalists deflect attention from the exploitative and detrimental effects of British colonial rule. Historical monuments such as the Taj Mahal have fallen victim to this revisionist agenda, while textbooks have been purged of Mughal history, leaving Indian children with an incomplete understanding of their own heritage.
Impact on Religious Minorities:
The destruction of historical mosques, the most notorious being the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, and the construction of a temple in its place, epitomize the BJP’s anti-Muslim iconoclasm and Hindu triumphalism. These acts further exacerbate tensions and sow divisions within Indian society. Tragically, violence against Indian Muslims has become alarmingly routine, targeting individuals based on their religious practices, interfaith marriages, and even their right to protest.
