Lightstar Renewables, a renowned greenfield community solar developer, is preparing to embark on a groundbreaking initiative in the realm of solar energy in Wappingers Falls, Poughkeepsie. The Old Myers solar project, set to commence construction in autumn 2023, will be New York’s first agrivoltaics (dual-use) endeavor.

Spanning across a 15-acre family-owned site, the Old Myers project is a 2 MW dual-use community solar endeavor that holds immense significance. It not only enables the Thompson family to maintain agricultural production on the land but also generates stable lease income over the next 25 years. The project is anticipated to be completed by summer 2024.

Agrivoltaics, often referred to as AgPV, is an innovative concept that involves integrating crop production and grazing areas within and around solar installations. In the case of Old Myers, the solar panels will be positioned at heights and intervals that allow space for crops to flourish and livestock to graze. Additionally, the solar panels offer protection to the crops against extreme weather conditions such as storms, frosts, and heat waves.

The Old Myers project will cultivate an array of produce, including strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, and lavender, among others. This unique agrivoltaics undertaking will pave the way for active market produce production in New York. Lightstar plans to collaborate with local institutions to conduct comprehensive studies on the crops grown, documenting the project’s financial and agricultural outcomes to be shared widely.

Lightstar has been working closely with the farm owners since early 2022, assisting in the rezoning of the property at no cost to the farmers. This collaborative effort has resulted in an expanded solar and crop use case, enhancing productivity and efficiency. Moreover, Lightstar remains committed to supporting the project’s entire lifecycle by maintaining a strong partnership with the farmers and community members, ensuring long-term success.

In its dedication to regenerative agricultural practices, Lightstar has partnered with the American Farmland Trust (AFT), who provide guidance and promote the use of AFT’s Smart Solar Siting Principles as a fundamental aspect of solar and farming projects.

Furthermore, Lightstar has joined forces with Solar Agriculture Services (SolAg) to ensure the success of the Old Myers project by supplying invaluable knowledge, oversight, and consultation services.

Apart from the project’s agricultural and environmental benefits, residents and local businesses will have access to discounted community solar subscriptions, resulting in significant electricity bill savings. Additionally, the project will generate tax revenue for the local municipality, contributing positively to the community’s economic growth.
