Construction has officially commenced on bp’s groundbreaking Peacock Solar project, an ambitious endeavor set to generate 187 MW DC of solar energy. Located just 10 miles north of Corpus Christi in San Patricio County, Texas, this innovative initiative marks another significant stride towards sustainable energy production.
The Peacock Solar project represents an essential collaboration between bp and Gulf Coast Growth Ventures (GCGV), a joint venture between ExxonMobil and SABIC. GCGV specializes in producing a wide range of materials vital to various industries including clothing manufacturing, food packaging, construction materials, agricultural film, and more. Under a long-term power purchase agreement, Peacock will exclusively supply all its generated electricity to GCGV’s facility located nearby, ensuring a clean and reliable energy source to power its operations.
Once fully operational, the Peacock installation will annually generate sufficient renewable energy to power approximately 34,000 homes. More importantly, this project is anticipated to make a significant positive impact on the local economy. During the construction phase, approximately 300 jobs will be created, boosting employment opportunities for the region. Over the first 25 years of its existence, the project is expected to generate over $25 million in tax revenue, further benefiting the community.
Lightsource bp, a globally recognized solar firm and the joint-venture partner of bp, is spearheading the development of the Peacock Solar project while simultaneously managing its construction. Collaborating with leading U.S.-based manufacturers, First Solar and GameChange Solar, PCL Construction—the primary contractor for engineering, procurement, and construction—will install ultra-low carbon solar panels and advanced trackers on the site.
Peacock Solar is not just about harnessing renewable energy but also about creating a harmonious blend with nature. This remarkable initiative will incorporate various agricultural and biodiversity activities within its grounds. To preserve and promote local ecosystems, native plant species beneficial to pollinators and wildlife will be planted under and around the solar panels. Additionally, the project will improve habitat value, species composition, soil health, and overall ecosystem functions at the solar farm. It will also embrace agrivoltaics by facilitating sheep grazing on-site, benefiting the local rural economy while ensuring that the farmland remains productive.
The Peacock Solar project aligns with bp’s overarching commitment to renewable energy expansion and the transition towards a sustainable future. As part of their ambitious goals, bp aims to invest in and develop 50 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
