Southern Power Expands Renewable Fleet with Acquisition of First Wyoming Solar Facility

Southern Power, a prominent wholesale energy provider and subsidiary of Southern Company, continues its commitment to renewable energy with the recent acquisition of its 30th solar project – the South Cheyenne Solar Facility. This 150 MW facility, located in Wyoming, marks Southern Power’s initial foray into solar energy in the state, bolstering its growing portfolio of clean generating assets that span from California to Maine. The project, currently under construction, is anticipated to commence commercial operation in the first quarter of 2024.

Developed by Qcells USA Corp. (Qcells USA), South Cheyenne has also enlisted the expertise of Qcells USA for engineering, procurement, and construction services, as well as serving as the module supplier. An estimated 180 jobs will be created during the peak construction phase, contributing to local economic growth and development.

The South Cheyenne Solar Facility will operate via a 20-year power purchase agreement, enabling the sale of electricity and associated renewable energy credits generated by the facility. This long-term commitment ensures a stable and sustainable source of energy for the region.

With the addition of the South Cheyenne project, Southern Power’s solar portfolio now exceeds 2,740 MW of solar generation. This progressive approach contributes to Southern Power’s overall renewable fleet, which encompasses 30 solar facilities and 15 wind facilities operating or currently under construction, amounting to a robust 5,280 MW.

The acquisition aligns with Southern Power’s strategic vision of reinforcing its wholesale business through acquiring and developing reliable generating assets, protected by long-term contracts with creditworthy counterparts. This commitment not only strengthens Southern Power’s position in the market but also underscores their dedication to renewable energy and the transition towards a sustainable future.
