Aung Sang Suu Kyi’s younger son, Kim Aris, has broken his silence to express his deep worries about his mother’s deteriorating health and the dire situation in the country. Aris, who has intentionally shied away from the media for years, now feels compelled to raise awareness and advocate for his imprisoned mother’s wellbeing.

A Mother in Isolation:

Aung Sang Suu Kyi, the revered leader of Myanmar’s democratically elected government, was arrested during the military coup of 2021. Since then, she has faced unjust prosecution and has been handed multiple charges aimed at sidelining her from politics. Currently serving a prison sentence of 27 years, Suu Kyi’s health and well-being have become a mounting concern for her family, especially Kim Aris.

Confinement in Solitude:

In an emotional video interview from his London home, Aris revealed the distressing conditions his mother endures. Suu Kyi is denied access to her legal counsel, personal doctors, and any form of social interaction with fellow prisoners. Essentially confined in solitary confinement, the absence of any contact or updates has left Aris deeply worried about his mother’s physical and mental state.

A Cry for Help:

Having refrained from public engagements for most of his life, Aris’s decision to speak out stems from the desperate plea to ensure his mother’s well-being and advocate for Myanmar’s dire situation. Aris plans to make use of social media platforms and initiate a campaign aimed at raising awareness and funds for humanitarian purposes within the country.

Challenges in Communication:

Aris expressed his frustration with the Myanmar military government’s reluctance to provide information about his mother’s health. Despite attempting to contact them through various avenues, including the embassy, Aris has been met with silence and indifference. Independent Myanmar media and social media platforms have been his only sources of information regarding his mother’s wellbeing.

A Tragic History Repeated:

This is not the first time Suu Kyi has faced confinement; she spent nearly 15 years under house arrest during the rule of a previous military regime. However, during that time, she could receive visitors, have communication, and was allowed to spend time with her family. Aris emphasizes that the current situation is far worse, with Suu Kyi deprived of even the most basic human rights, exacerbating concerns about her health and well-being.

Raising Global Awareness:

Recognizing the multitude of natural disasters and humanitarian crises happening worldwide, Aris acknowledges the challenges of maintaining constant attention on every issue. Nevertheless, he implores individuals and governments around the world to rally together and support the people of Myanmar. Aris suggests that a fraction of the aid provided to other causes would significantly impact Myanmar’s situation, potentially ending the needless bloodshed and restoring hope for the future.
