Silfab Solar, a distinguished photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturer based in North America, has partnered with NorSun, a reputable Norwegian ingot and wafer manufacturer. Their collaboration aims to establish a clean and reliable source of Western-produced silicon wafers, solidifying Silfab’s commitment to strengthen its supply chain and enhance domestic sourcing efforts.
As part of its strategic initiatives, Silfab intends to expand its United States-based cell production by 1 GW while also scaling up its annual module production by an additional 1.3 GW, slated for implementation as early as mid-2024. To support this endeavor, NorSun is planning to construct a 5-GW ingot and wafer production facility within the United States, with the backing of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
Through this agreement, Silfab will increase its acquisition of “clean” wafers sourced from the United States and Europe, positively impacting the carbon footprint of their high-performance solar modules. NorSun recently secured $8.5 million in new equity, further bolstering growth projects in both the U.S. and Europe. Simultaneously, Silfab is making use of a $125 million investment round to establish their third U.S. facility, aimed at meeting rising demand for industry-leading PV modules and unlocking the capability to manufacture their own solar cells.
With a shared vision for a sustainable future, Silfab and NorSun are poised to reshape the solar energy industry with their relentless pursuit of technological excellence and commitment to environmentally responsible practices.
