Avangrid Project Aims to Improve Transmission Utilization

Avangrid Inc., a leading sustainable energy company and a part of the renowned Iberdrola Group, has recently partnered with LineVision Inc. to embark on an innovative pilot project in New York State. This collaboration seeks to unlock additional capacity on Avangrid’s transmission lines for the integration of renewable energy.

Deploying advanced monitoring technology in the Hornell area of New York, this groundbreaking project aims to address grid congestion by providing real-time data on safe power flow through the existing transmission infrastructure. The crucial information and visibility obtained through this initiative could profoundly support the integration of more renewable energy resources into New York’s electrical grid, ultimately advancing the state’s clean energy goals.

Traditionally, the capacity of electric transmission lines has been determined through static line ratings that rely on conservative and fixed values based on projected weather conditions. However, the implementation of LineVision’s state-of-the-art monitoring system will enable Avangrid to access real-time data, granting greater flexibility in safely increasing the energy flow through the transmission lines based on prevailing conditions.

With the introduction of dynamic line ratings, this advanced monitoring technology combines real-time properties such as sag, temperature, and forecasted weather conditions to accurately ascertain the capacity limits of the power lines. As a result, grid operations become more informed, and the utilization of transmission lines can be enhanced without the need for extensive grid upgrades.

As part of this pioneering project, LineVision will collaborate with Avangrid’s electric utility operating company, New York State Electric & Gas. Together, they will install non-contact LiDAR sensors to monitor overhead transmission lines, accelerating the adoption of renewable energy sources and propelling progress towards New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act goal of achieving 70% renewable electricity by 2030. These sensors will be installed on two transmission lines: one connecting Elma (Erie County) to Strykersville (Wyoming County) and the other running from Warsaw to Perry, both located in Wyoming County.

Avangrid and LineVision secured funding for this project through round two of the Future Grid Challenge program from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

By maximizing the capacity and efficiency of their transmission lines, Avangrid’s partnership with LineVision exemplifies their commitment to enabling the widespread adoption of renewable energy and driving New York’s clean energy transition. This innovative project not only contributes to grid reliability but also paves the way for a sustainable and greener future.
