In the wake of the tragic assassination of Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, the Construye party has chosen Christian Zurita, a respected investigative journalist and close associate of Villavicencio, to carry the torch in the nation’s convulsed elections. With a firm commitment to combating corruption and advocating for change, Zurita aims to continue the vision outlined by his dear friend and contribute to the transformation of Ecuador’s political landscape.

At 53 years old, Zurita hails from Quito and shares a similar passion for unraveling domestic corruption issues through his prolific writings. He has earned widespread recognition for his investigative reports and in-depth analysis of the country’s challenging political climate. Zurita becomes the second candidate put forward by the centrist Construye party following the devastating loss of Villavicencio, who was tragically assassinated just days ago.

While the Construye party officially nominated Zurita as their candidate, unfortunate bureaucratic hurdles have hindered his participation in the only scheduled pre-election debate. Diana Atamaint, the president of the National Electoral Council, confirmed that the necessary paperwork for Zurita’s involvement in the debate was not cleared in time. Consequently, Zurita will not have the opportunity to showcase his vision and policy proposals alongside the other presidential candidates.

Looking to carry forward the ideals and aspirations of Villavicencio, Zurita has pledged to campaign on an anti-crime agenda. Together with his running mate Andrea Gonzalez, an environmental activist, Zurita aims to address the prevalent security concerns faced by Ecuadorians. At a press conference held in Ecuador’s capital, both Zurita and Gonzalez appeared determined, wearing police-issued bulletproof vests, symbolizing their commitment to standing up against violence and insecurity.

The untimely demise of Villavicencio during a campaign event in north-central Quito served as a stark reminder of the spiraling political violence in the country. While six suspects, all of Colombian nationality, were apprehended following the attack, the alleged gunman tragically bled to death while in custody. Such incidents further underscore the urgency for change and the importance of electing leaders who can foster a climate of peace and stability.

President Guillermo Lasso’s decision to dissolve Ecuador’s congress triggered snap elections, scheduled for August 20. In accordance with the electoral rules, if no candidate manages to secure an outright majority or garner at least 40% of valid votes with a 10-point advantage over the nearest competitor, a runoff election will be held on October 15. The upcoming election serves as a crucial juncture for Ecuador as it looks to shape its political destiny.

The nomination of Christian Zurita as the presidential candidate for the Construye party brings hope and represents a new chapter in Ecuador’s political landscape. With his investigative background, commitment to tackling corruption, and dedication to enhancing security, Zurita stands ready to carry on the legacy of his fallen comrade and contribute to the nation’s progress. Ecuador’s electorate will undoubtedly play a key role in shaping the future by casting their votes in the upcoming elections.
