Public Storage, Solar Landscape Join Forces for Groundbreaking Multistate Community Solar Project

Public Storage, a renowned national self-storage company, and Solar Landscape, a leading commercial and industrial rooftop solar developer, have embarked on an ambitious journey to construct the first of over 130 rooftop community solar projects. These projects, spanning multiple states, aim to provide renewable energy to thousands of homes while making it accessible to low- and moderate-income residents.

In Maryland, New Jersey, and Illinois, a total of 133 community solar installations are being developed, ultimately generating clean energy to power over 10,000 homes. With a combined capacity of 87.53 MW DC, this clean energy portfolio ranks among the largest in the nation, opening the doors to affordable renewable energy for local communities.

One of the key objectives of this multistate community solar partnership is to bring renewable energy to individuals who face obstacles in installing their own solar panels. Factors such as high costs, limited roof control, or insufficient sunlight can hinder their access to renewable power. By allowing community residents to subscribe to nearby solar installations located on Public Storage’s rooftops, the program ensures discounted electricity, with additional benefits for low- and moderate-income households. Thanks to these rooftop projects, residents can save millions of dollars annually on their electricity bills.

As part of the nationwide community solar initiative, 21 projects spanning 13.2 MW were recently announced in Illinois. These projects, announced by the Illinois Power Agency in coordination with its Community-Driven Community Solar tranche of the Illinois Shines program, will serve nearly 1,500 households. By bringing renewable energy to more Illinois residents, this endeavor promises to make a significant environmental and economic impact.

Public Storage’s unwavering commitment extends to Maryland, where they will undertake 57 community solar installations with a particular focus on low-income communities. Serving almost 2,600 homes, including many low- and moderate-income families, this comprehensive portfolio is the largest contribution by any single company to the Maryland Community Solar Pilot Program’s LMI subcategory. These projects are projected to save residents nearly $1 million per year on their energy bills, reinforcing Public Storage’s dedication to sustainable practices.

Public Storage’s vision and dedication to community solar extend beyond Maryland. In Illinois, the company will dedicate up to 44 properties to community solar, including the recently approved 21 projects from the IPA. Additionally, Public Storage has plans to dedicate another 32 properties in New Jersey, further expanding their footprint in the community solar sector. Every step of the way, Public Storage and Solar Landscape have collaborated closely, ensuring effective site selection, optimal solar system design, exploring financing options, and successfully navigating state program applications.

This groundbreaking initiative will see renewable energy installations spread across more than 8 million square feet of Public Storage facility rooftops. The 133 solar projects being developed represent an impressive 13% of Public Storage’s steadfast commitment to installing solar panels on over 1,000 properties by 2025. As we move forward, Public Storage and Solar Landscape’s partnership promises to redefine how communities access and benefit from renewable energy.
