Global automotive supplier Vitesco Technologies, along with San Antonio-based Big Sun Solar and the Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative (GVEC), is spearheading a pioneering solar project in Central Texas. This project, featuring one of the state’s first three-party power purchase agreements, showcases Vitesco Technologies’ commitment to sustainable energy solutions and marks a significant step towards a greener future.
Situated on 12 acres adjacent to the Vitesco Technologies manufacturing facility in Seguin, the solar project is set to be completed and commissioned by the end of 2023, following its groundbreaking in late July. Through the power purchase agreement, Big Sun Solar will own, operate, and build the project while Vitesco Technologies will procure the electricity generated from GVEC to offset their energy consumption.
The 2.6 MW DC project will comprise approximately 4,800 solar panels equipped with trackers, allowing them to follow the sun’s movements throughout the day. This innovative approach will enable the project to generate around 4,800 MWh per year, meeting approximately 13% of Vitesco Technologies’ annual energy consumption at the Seguin facility. To put this into perspective, this output would be sufficient to power around 330 Texas homes (with an average size of 1,800 square feet) each year.
Vitesco Technologies is firmly committed to achieving climate neutrality for its entire production and internal business operations by 2030. Furthermore, the company has set an ambitious goal to make its entire value chain climate neutral by 2040 at the latest. This vision encompasses all aspects, from the extraction of raw materials to the utilization of end products, emphasizing their dedication to environmentally friendly practices.
Vitesco Technologies has been a vital contributor to Seguin’s economy for over half a century, employing approximately 1,700 individuals, which accounts for about 5% of the city’s population. This solar project represents the company’s largest undertaking of its kind in North America, having already initiated similar programs near its manufacturing locations in Mexico earlier this year.
As the partnership between Vitesco Technologies, Big Sun Solar, and GVEC sets an inspiring precedent, the project exemplifies the potential to transition the transportation sector to sustainable solutions. With its sights set on a greener future, Vitesco Technologies continues to forge a path towards climate neutrality while demonstrating its commitment to being an industry leader.
