The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has recently announced its collaboration with First Solar, securing 279 MW of advanced thin-film solar panels for the upcoming Lawrence County Solar Project in Lawrence County, Alabama. With commercial operation set to commence in 2027, this project marks TVA’s increasing focus on solar energy in the region.

The Lawrence County Solar Project is a significant milestone for both TVA and First Solar, as it aligns with their shared commitment to sustainable solutions. As First Solar prepares to commission its fourth manufacturing facility in the United States, Lawrence County is poised to become home to one of the largest fully vertically integrated solar manufacturing facilities in the country by 2025.

Georges Antoun, the Chief Commercial Officer at First Solar, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “As America’s Solar Company, we’re pleased that our technology will power the Lawrence County Solar Project. As we expand our manufacturing capabilities, it is crucial that the communities we operate in benefit from job creation, economic value, and the clean electricity generated by our solar technology.”

Recognizing the significance of this collaboration, First Solar is investing approximately $1.3 billion to enhance its manufacturing capacity in the United States. By 2026, the company plans to increase its annual nameplate capacity from the current 6.5 GW DC to approximately 10.9 GW DC. As part of this expansion, First Solar is committing $1.1 billion to the 3.5 GW DC Lawrence County facility, while also investing $185 million to expand its existing manufacturing footprint in Ohio. Moreover, the company has earmarked up to $370 million for the development of a dedicated research and development (R&D) innovation center in Perrysburg, Ohio, which is anticipated to be completed in 2024.

The Lawrence County Solar Project will not only contribute to increasing renewable energy capacity but will also bring substantial economic benefits to the local community.
