Sarcos Technology and Robotics Corp., a leading designer, developer, and manufacturer of advanced robotic systems, solutions, and software, has entered into a groundbreaking collaboration agreement with Blattner Co., a reputed provider and installer of renewable energy. This partnership aims to revolutionize the field of solar construction by developing and refining Sarcos’ autonomous mobile robotic system. The objective is to optimize employee safety and enhance the efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) module installation in utility-scale solar projects.
The solar construction industry, like many others, is grappling with significant worker shortages in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing this challenge, Sarcos envisions that the implementation of their autonomous robotic solar construction system will alleviate workforce constraints and drive progress in the industry.
According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), annual solar installations must increase by 60% through 2030 to meet climate targets. Accomplishing this ambitious goal would require the addition of nearly 800,000 solar workers. Robotics offers a promising solution to address labor pressures while simultaneously promoting on-the-job safety.
Sarcos and Blattner’s collaboration will build upon the foundation of the Sarcos Outdoor Autonomous Manipulation of Photovoltaic Panels (O-AMPP) project, which has received funding from the U.S. Department of Energy. The primary objective of O-AMPP is to streamline solar field construction.
The O-AMPP robotic system is being meticulously designed and developed to deliver, detect, lift, and place PV modules in the field. Its key goals are as follows:
1. Improving worker safety and productivity: By leveraging the robotic system, a smaller team will be able to install modules at a significantly higher rate, all while optimizing safety measures.
2. Enhancing construction speed: PV module installation, often a labor-intensive task, will be expedited through the use of robotic technology.
3. Ensuring installation quality: Robotic handling of modules will ensure precise and consistent support and positioning during lifting and placement processes, ultimately reducing the risk of module breakage.
Sarcos and Blattner will collaborate closely to evaluate and refine the technology, functionality, and safety of the system through a series of rigorous field trials. Blattner, known for its expertise in renewable energy installation, will provide funding, technical know-how, and dedicated facilities for this research endeavor. The joint effort aims to test the system under varying environmental conditions across different sites, preparing for the anticipated commercial launch of Sarcos’ robotic solar construction system by late 2024.
This collaboration between Sarcos and Blattner represents a monumental stride towards transforming the solar construction landscape. As the industry strives to meet climate targets and overcome workforce challenges, the integration of robotics offers immense potential to streamline processes, bolster safety measures, and facilitate the rapid expansion of solar installations.
